Birmingham Phoenix host Trent Rockets at Edgbaston on Friday, the fourth match of the 2026 men’s competition, with the women’s fixture at 3pm followed by the men’s game at 6.30pm UK time. It is a repeat of last year’s meeting at the same ground, when Trent Rockets won by three wickets with a ball to spare after Rehan Ahmed took 3 for 15 and then hit an unbeaten 37.
Bookmakers make Rockets clear favourites this time, around 3/4 with Grosvenor, Casumo, LiveScore Bet and Virgin Bet, or as short as 8/13 with BoyleSports. Phoenix are out to 5/4 with BoyleSports and no shorter than 8/9 on the Betfair Exchange.
The case for Birmingham Phoenix
Phoenix go into the season without their intended captain. Jacob Bethell, pre-signed for £340,000 and appointed to lead the side after Liam Livingstone’s move to London Spirit, withdrew on 20 July with a right knee injury after an MRI scan, four days before this match. Donovan Ferreira takes over the armband instead. The South African all-rounder is joined by a squad rebuilt around auction signings Rehan Ahmed, Mitch Owen and Saqib Mahmood, with Joe Clarke, Will Smeed and Laurie Evans giving the batting some know-how and Chris Wood and Mustafizur Rahman sharing the new ball. Ahmed in particular arrives with a point to prove against his old side, having played the matchwinning hand for Rockets in this exact fixture twelve months ago.
The case for Trent Rockets
Rockets were beaten Hundred finalists last season, losing by 26 runs to Oval Invincibles at Lord’s after finishing second in the table with six wins from eight games. The captain who beat them, Sam Billings, has since left Oval Invincibles and now leads Rockets himself, arriving at Trent Bridge on the back of three straight Hundred titles. He inherits a top order with genuine depth: Ben Duckett and Tom Banton at the top, Sam Hain and Joe Root in the middle, and the power-hitting of Tim David and Finn Allen to come. A captain with that recent trophy record walking into a squad this settled is the plainest explanation for the shorter price.
What looks the smart angle
Phoenix losing their first-choice captain four days out is the kind of late disruption that is hard to price in properly, and the odds still look built around what this squad was supposed to look like with Bethell leading it. Ferreira has the game to hold things together, but a reshuffled top order facing Billings’ depth of batting, with Root and David both able to change a game in five or six overs, makes Rockets’ 8/13 look fair rather than short. Backing Phoenix at 5/4 is a bet on Rehan Ahmed repeating last year’s heroics against his old side rather than on the balance of the two squads. As always, this is analysis and opinion, not a certainty, and a 100-ball innings can turn on two or three overs either way.
