The exchange tells a different story: Betfair Exchange has Welsh Fire backed in at 3/5, with Rockets drifting to 4/5, a split worth noting before deciding which side of the book to trust.
The case for Welsh Fire
Phil Salt’s side are unbeaten through two matches. They opened with a six-wicket chase down of Southern Brave, Salt’s unbeaten 47 seeing them home with two balls to spare after a seam attack of Chris Woakes, Sam Cook and Marco Jansen kept Brave to 135. Then came the statement result: Rachin Ravindra’s 98 off just 22 balls to fifty, the joint fourth-highest innings in the competition’s history, set up a 15-run win over MI London, with Lockie Ferguson taking 4 for 25 and Grace Potts removing MI London’s top three. Joe Root and Jordan Cox, the two biggest buys of this year’s auction, add further depth to a top order that has not yet needed to lean on either man. A side scoring at this rate with a bowling attack this varied is a reasonable case for favouritism, whatever the mainstream bookmakers say.
The case for Trent Rockets
Lewis Gregory’s Rockets sit at 1-1 after a tighter route to this point. They lost their opener to Birmingham Phoenix by 10 runs despite Tom Banton’s 67, beaten in a shootout that produced 29 sixes between the two sides. They responded by chasing down London Spirit at Trent Bridge, Ben Duckett’s 47-ball 75 moving him to third on the competition’s all-time run-scoring list, with Craig Overton finishing the job by hitting the winning runs off his own brother, Jamie. A top order of Banton, Duckett, Finn Allen and Tim David can score as fast as anyone in the tournament, and Mitchell Santner and Mohammad Amir give Gregory two frontline options with genuine international pedigree.
What looks the smart angle
The retail bookmakers’ view, Rockets at 4/5 and Fire drifting to evens or bigger, looks generous to a Welsh Fire side that has won both games this year in contrasting fashion, with a top three now including two of the auction’s most expensive signings still to fire. The exchange price, Welsh Fire backed as short as 3/5, sits closer to what the form line actually suggests. Evens or 11/10 on Welsh Fire with Betfair Sportsbook looks the more interesting number on the board given how comfortably they saw off MI London, though Rockets’ top order has the firepower to turn any game inside a handful of overs, as Duckett showed on Sunday. This is opinion rather than a prediction, and a 100-ball match between two sides this well matched at the top of the order can swing on two or three overs either way.
