Trent Rockets host Birmingham Phoenix at Trent Bridge on Wednesday, women’s game at 2.30pm UK time followed by the men’s fixture at 6.30pm. It is a rematch of the tournament opener at Edgbaston on 24 July, and both sides arrive in very different form to how they left that game.
Birmingham Phoenix won that first meeting by 10 runs, Joe Clarke and Will Smeed putting on 104 for the first wicket before Rehan Ahmed’s 25-ball 48 and a late Donovan Ferreira cameo pushed Phoenix to 214 for 4. Trent Rockets have not lost since.
The case for Trent Rockets
Lewis Gregory’s side have won four of their five matches and sit top of the men’s table. After that opening defeat they beat London Spirit by four wickets at Trent Bridge, Ben Duckett’s 75 doing the early work before Craig Overton hit the winning runs off his own brother Jamie. They followed that with a nine-wicket rout of Welsh Fire at Cardiff, Duckett unbeaten on 52 as Rockets chased 122 down with 28 balls to spare. The result that took them top came at Old Trafford on 31 July, Finn Allen’s unbeaten 72 off 35 balls, 11 fours and two sixes, seeing off Manchester Super Giants and a Jos Buttler half-century with six wickets and 13 balls in hand. A top order of Duckett, Allen, Tom Banton and Tim David has scored fast and consistently all tournament, and Mitchell Santner gives Gregory a genuine international option with the ball.
The case for Birmingham Phoenix
Phoenix have gone the other way since that Edgbaston win. Southern Brave beat them by 12 runs on 30 July in a low-scoring match where only Will Smeed passed 30 in the chase, and Welsh Fire followed up on 1 August with a seven-wicket win at home, Joe Root’s unbeaten 58 and a 46 from Phil Salt seeing Fire chase down 138 with balls to spare. That is back-to-back defeats since the win that put Phoenix second in the table behind MI London on net run rate, and a squad built around Smeed, Clarke and Liam Livingstone now needs a response away from home against the form side in the competition.
What looks the smart angle
William Hill has this at 8/11 Trent Rockets and 11/10 Birmingham Phoenix, and the shape of the market matches the shape of the last two weeks: a Rockets side that has won four on the spin against a Phoenix side that has lost its last two. Grosvenor and Casumo go further still, 4/7 the home side, which looks a fair reflection of how comfortably Trent Rockets have chased in their last two outings. Anyone wanting the bigger number on Phoenix gets it with BoyleSports at 6/5, and there is a case for it: Phoenix have already beaten this exact opposition once this year, and Rehan Ahmed and Donovan Ferreira are both capable of turning a game inside a handful of balls in either discipline. That is a reason to note the price, not a prediction, and Trent Rockets remain the side in form on current results.

Welsh Fire host Southern Brave at Sophia Gardens today, and Sunrisers Leeds face London Spirit at Headingley on Tuesday, the last two fixtures before Wednesday’s Trent Bridge double-header.
