Hull City are back in the Premier League for the first time in nine years, and their reward for winning the Championship play-offs is a Saturday lunchtime visit from Manchester United. Kick-off at the MKM Stadium is 12.30pm UK time on 22 August, the second fixture of the opening round after Arsenal hosted Coventry City on the Friday night.
Hull went up the hard way, finishing third and then beating Millwall in the semi-final and Middlesbrough in the final under Sergej Jakirovic, the Bosnian coach who arrived from Kayserispor mid-season and turned a relegation fight into a promotion. Getting back among the Premier League’s biggest names after nine years outside it is the story of the day before a ball is kicked, and it does not get a gentler opening fixture than this one.
The case for Manchester United
United strengthened again over the summer under Ruben Amorim, adding Andrey Santos from Chelsea for around £50m and Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, on top of last year’s business that brought in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. That gives Amorim more attacking options than a newly promoted side away at home should have to face, and United arrive on the back of a pre-season that has them winning 83 percent of their last six matches in all competitions.
The concern is Sesko himself. The forward has not featured since a shin injury in May and missed the whole of pre-season, so United’s most expensive summer signing from last year may not be fit enough for a first start. Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount are both being monitored, and Lisandro Martinez remains a longer-term absence at centre-back. None of that changes the gulf in overall squad strength, but it thins out the options Amorim actually has for matchday one.
The case for Hull
Fourteen new players arrived at the MKM Stadium this summer, with goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis the headline buy at a fee north of £18m, alongside Jack Butland’s move from Rangers, Norwegian midfielder Jens Hjertø-Dahl and free transfers Matt Targett and Hidemasa Morita. That is a squad rebuilt with Premier League survival in mind rather than one long shot at a good season, and Jakirovic has gone for experience in the spine of the team.
Butland is unavailable through an arm injury for the opener, along with midfielder Eliot Matazo, which is an unwelcome complication for a side already adjusting to the step up. Hull have won three of their last six games in all competitions heading into the season, form that owes more to Championship opposition than anything that tells you much about Saturday, but a promoted side with almost nothing to lose at home against the champions-elect favourites has produced upsets before.
The prices
Ten UK books are compared above. Manchester United are priced between 1/3 and 2/5 to win, Hull out between 13/2 and 8/1, and the draw sits between 7/2 and 17/4 depending where you look. That is as short a favourite as this fixture list produces all weekend, shorter even than Arsenal were made against Coventry three days earlier, and it reflects the size of the gap between a club assembled for a top-four push and one that has spent nine years outside the competition altogether.
Betfred and Paddy Power go shortest of anyone on Hull causing the upset, pricing them at 8/1 against 13/2 with William Hill, Coral and Ladbrokes. On the draw, BoyleSports’ 7/2 is the shortest number against Unibet’s 17/4, the widest gap on the card. Small differences on a heavily one-sided market still add up if you are backing the value side rather than the favourite.
What looks the smart angle
There is little sense chasing Manchester United at 1/3 to 2/5 when the whole appeal of a fixture like this is the size of the gap, not the certainty of the outcome. Sesko’s continued absence and De Ligt’s fitness doubts trim United’s attacking and defensive options for an opener that should, on paper, need neither. Hull’s home form under Jakirovic carried them through the play-offs, and a promoted side with a rebuilt spine and nothing to lose tends to make life harder on an opening weekend than a raw point-spread implies. This is opinion and analysis, not a prediction, and newly promoted sides have a habit of making the champions-elect work far harder than the odds suggest in round one.
