York’s Ebor Festival runs four days this week, Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 August, and it is the closest thing British flat racing has to a second Royal Ascot: four Group 1 races inside four days, and Saturday’s Ebor Handicap itself, the richest handicap in the country, closing the week with £500,000 on the line.
Wednesday opened with the Juddmonte International, Thursday brings the Yorkshire Oaks, and Friday afternoon is the one worth clearing space for: the Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes at 3.35pm, a Group 1 sprint over the minimum trip that has turned into a farewell tour for one of the meeting’s biggest names.
Asfoora’s last run
Asfoora goes to post in the Nunthorpe for the final time before retiring to broodmare duties. The Australian-bred mare has collected three European Group 1s in two seasons, headlined by King Charles III Stakes glory at Royal Ascot in 2024 and back-to-back defences of this exact race and France’s Prix de l’Abbaye in 2025. She was only fourth in the King George Stakes at Goodwood last time, but that has not put punters off: William Hill quote her at 8/1, down from as big as 25/1 earlier in the summer, and the firm has named her its worst-case result for the entire festival. When a bookmaker says that in public, it means the money has gone one way.
She does not have it to herself. This is a third meeting with Big Evs, the standout sprinter of the last two seasons, and the field has been strengthened late by three supplementary entries: Rumstar, Lady Iman and Spicy Marg all joined in the week before the race, a sign that connections rate this year’s Nunthorpe field strongly enough to pay the supplementary fee rather than wait for an easier target.
What looks the smart angle
A sprint field carrying three late supplementary entries and a heavily backed sentimental favourite is not a field to treat as a two-horse race, whatever the market says about Asfoora’s chance of a fairytale send-off. Big Evs has beaten her before over course and distance conditions this exact fixture provides, and a mare who was only fourth last time out at Goodwood is not unbeatable on current form alone. The retirement narrative is a reason to watch, not a reason to back blind. This is opinion and analysis, not a prediction, and five furlongs at York has a habit of throwing up results the story of the week did not predict.
Elsewhere at the meeting
Wednesday’s Juddmonte International went off with Ombudsman a well-backed favourite at odds-on, and Thursday’s Yorkshire Oaks saw the market reshuffle after Estrange was withdrawn, leaving Kalpana installed as the new favourite. The week closes on Saturday with the Ebor Handicap itself at 3.35pm, a maximum field of up to 22 runners fighting for £500,000 and the biggest prize of the week, with Tarriance and Emit both sitting among the shorter-priced runners after firm ante-post support.
