Monday night at Craven Cottage closes the opening round of the Premier League season, and it hands both clubs the same thing: a first competitive game under a manager who has never taken charge of them before. Xabi Alonso takes Chelsea to Fulham at 8pm UK time on 24 August, where Álvaro Arbeloa is starting his first job at this level. The two were teammates at Real Madrid. John Brooks referees, with Darren England on VAR.
Neither side has much to look back on fondly. Chelsea finished 10th last season and missed European football altogether; Fulham came 11th, separated from them only by goal difference. Both owners responded by changing manager, and only one of them then spent heavily.
The case for Chelsea
£333 million went out of Stamford Bridge this summer, headlined by Morgan Rogers arriving from Aston Villa for around £117m, a British record fee. Maxence Lacroix came from Crystal Palace at the end of July, Geovany Quenda finally completed a move from Sporting Lisbon that was agreed back in March 2025, and Valentin Barco, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson all signed on too. That is a squad reshaped rather than topped up, and Alonso inherits far more than Enzo Maresca had to work with in the same fixture last August.
The complication is how much of it is available. Wesley Fofana is suspended after his red card against Sunderland on the final day of last season. Henderson has a wrist injury. Caleb Wiley (groin), Aaron Anselmino, Mamadou Sarr and Emanuel Emegha (hamstring) are all doubts, and Quenda is not expected to feature. Welbeck has been managing a small problem but Alonso has said he is available. A £333m window does not help much if the players who arrived in it are watching from the stand, and Chelsea’s centre-back options in particular are thin for a first game.
The case for Fulham
Arbeloa took over after five years of Marco Silva, and he does so with 28 senior games of management behind him. Fulham’s window was the opposite of Chelsea’s: Gonzalo García and César Palacios came in from Real Madrid, 19-year-old Jonah Kusi-Asare and 22-year-old Shea Charles joined, and Harry Wilson left for Leeds while Raúl Jiménez departed too. That is a younger squad with less end product than the one that finished 11th, and it is being asked to learn a new way of playing in week one.
Joachim Andersen is suspended and Tom Cairney is out with a knee injury, which takes experience out of both the defence and the middle of the pitch on a night when Fulham need it. The one thing genuinely in their favour is the fixture itself. Fulham beat Chelsea 2-1 at Craven Cottage in January, and the two clubs have traded home wins in recent meetings, Chelsea’s 2-0 there in August 2025 being the other side of it. This is not a ground where Chelsea turn up and win as a matter of routine.
The prices
Eleven UK bookmakers are compared above. Chelsea are between 4/5 and 9/10 to win, Fulham between 27/10 and 3/1, and the draw sits between 13/5 and 29/10. For a game between last season’s 10th and 11th, the market has decided the summer spending counts for something, but not for very much: Chelsea’s price implies a little over half the outcomes go their way.
The gaps are wide for a Premier League match. Paddy Power and Sky Bet both go 3/1 about Fulham where 888sport want you to take 27/10, and on the draw Unibet’s 29/10 stands well clear of the 13/5 at 888sport and Virgin Bet. On Chelsea, Coral and Ladbrokes are the top of the market at 9/10 against Virgin Bet’s 4/5. On a £10 bet that difference is small in isolation and worth having every week.
What looks the smart angle
Chelsea at odds-on is asking you to price a £333m squad you have not seen play a competitive game together, missing a suspended centre-back and carrying four fitness doubts, away at a ground where they lost in January. The money says the gap between these teams is now real. The team sheet says a fair amount of that money will not be on the pitch on Monday.
Fulham’s own case is weaker than last season’s, with Andersen and Cairney out and a manager still finding his level. Where the value sits is the draw, priced between 13/5 and 29/10 in a fixture between two sides that finished a goal difference apart, both starting from scratch tactically. This is opinion and analysis rather than a prediction. Opening-night games under new managers are the hardest of the season to read, which is exactly why the tightest markets are usually the ones worth avoiding.
