UEFA Champions League · Play-off round, second leg

Lyon v Fenerbahce preview: Champions League play-off second leg odds and offers

Lyon and Fenerbahce meet again on Wednesday with nothing settled from the first leg. Lois Openda put Lyon ahead in Istanbul on 18 August, Mason Greenwood levelled for Fenerbahce, and the tie stands at 1-1 going into the second leg at Groupama Stadium, kicking off 8pm UK time on TNT Sports. The winner takes a place in this season’s Champions League league phase. The loser drops into the Europa League.

For Lyon that stake is bigger than one European night suggests. The club is playing under DNCG financial sanctions after debts reported at around €505m, missed out on a top-four Ligue 1 finish last season, and owner John Textor’s project needs the revenue and prestige a league-phase campaign brings. Fenerbahce’s motivation cuts the other way: the club has not reached the Champions League league phase since 2008-09, and new head coach Ismail Kartal, back for a fourth spell in charge since June, is trying to end that wait while also chasing a tight Super Lig title race against Galatasaray.

Team news

Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca has more good news than bad. Pavel Sulc is back after a knee injury, Nicolas Tagliafico has returned from his post-World Cup break, and both Tyler Morton and Corentin Tolisso are available. The one doubt is centre-back Moussa Niakhate, who is managing an ankle problem and may not be risked.

Fenerbahce have the longer absentee list. Goalkeeper Mert Gunok is sidelined, so Ederson keeps his place between the posts, centre-back Caglar Soyuncu is out with a muscular injury, and Jayden Oosterwolde is unavailable with a hamstring tendon tear as he completes a move to Roma. Kartal’s side arrive unbeaten in six European matches this term, with four wins and two draws in that run, and they will lean on that form to unsettle a Lyon side that has never actually lost to them: this is the sixth meeting between the clubs and Lyon are still unbeaten, going back to two Champions League group-stage wins in the early 2000s and a goalless Europa League draw in 2024-25.

The prices

Lyon are odds-on at home across the board, from 4/5 with the shortest UK books out to 10/11 with 888sport. Fenerbahce are priced between roughly 13/5 and 17/6, and the draw sits between 12/5 and 13/5. Seven UK bookmakers are in the table above, all excluding betting exchanges, and the spread is tight for a tie this open on paper: home advantage and Fenerbahce’s absentees look to be doing most of the work in the market.

Virgin Bet is the only one of our partner books with a live price on this fixture. William Hill and Betfred are not appearing in the-odds-api’s Champions League qualifying-round panel, the same gap we flagged on LASK v Celtic earlier this week and the pattern right through this year’s play-off round. That is a feed limitation, not a reason to skip either offer below.

The offers, and which one actually fits this bet

Ad: Virgin Bet carries the only partner price on this match, and its terms are straightforward here too. New customers who bet £10 and get £20 in free bets plus 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens need a qualifying bet at odds of 1/2 (1.5) or better, and every price in the table clears that easily, Lyon’s 4/5 favourite price included. Deposit £10 by debit card, place a £10 qualifier on any sportsbook market bar virtual sports, then accept the free bets from the pop-up within 7 days of your bet settling and use them within 7 days after that.

William Hill sets the same 1/2 minimum odds requirement. Ad: new customers using promo code R30 can bet £10 and get £30 in free bets, paid as 3 x £10 once the qualifying bet settles, and it works on this fixture the same way Virgin Bet’s does: a straight bet on Lyon, the draw or Fenerbahce all clear the qualifying odds line.

Betfred needs more care. Ad: the bet £10, get £50 in free bets offer requires a qualifying bet at Evens (2.0) or better, and nothing in the table above reaches that price on Lyon, whose longest quote is 1.91 with 888sport. A bet on the draw or on Fenerbahce clears 2.0 comfortably at every book listed, so Betfred’s offer fits this match if you fancy an upset or a share of the points, not if you’re backing the hosts. Betfred pays out as £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets, both credited within 24 hours of the qualifying bet settling and both gone after 7 days.

All three require a first deposit by debit card and exclude e-wallets from qualifying. The full significant terms sit on each offer card below this article.

What looks the smart angle

Lyon go into this with the better record, the better squad news, and home advantage in a stadium they have not lost a home European tie in for some time. Fenerbahce’s unbeaten European run says they will not simply roll over, and Kartal’s side scored the goal that got them back level in Istanbul, so backing Lyon to win comfortably looks less obviously right than backing them to win, full stop. At around 4/5 to 10/11, that is a short price for a game that is still level on aggregate, but the absentee list tips the balance Lyon’s way more than the head-to-head record alone would. This is analysis, not a prediction, and a two-legged tie level after 90 minutes each way can turn on one refereeing decision.

Elsewhere this week

The other three Champions League play-off second legs go on the same Wednesday night: AEK Athens host Levski Sofia, Viking FK play Dinamo Zagreb, and NK Celje face Slovan Bratislava, all deciding the last places in this season’s league phase. The Premier League is quiet again until Crystal Palace host Manchester City on Friday.

If you’re opening an account before kick-off in Lyon, Virgin Bet’s £30 in free bets lines up most cleanly with the prices on this page, with William Hill’s £30 with code R30 covering the same range of outcomes. New customers only, 18+, one per person, full terms apply.
