Tottenham host Everton at 5.30pm UK time on Saturday 12 September at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. Spurs go into it without a Premier League goal to their name this season, down among the bottom three. Everton arrive eighth and unbeaten.
The market does not read the way the table does. Spurs are evens to win at home, Everton around 5/2, the draw between 12/5 and 13/5. A side yet to score being made favourite tells you the bookmakers are weighing the fixture history heavily.
The case for Tottenham
The record against this opponent is the argument. Spurs have won their last five home league games against Everton and lost just one of the last 17 at this ground when the Toffees have visited. Whatever is wrong with the attack, it has tended to come right against this particular side.
There is also the simple pressure of the situation. A home team without a goal in its opening games, in front of a crowd that expects a top-four push, will throw bodies forward. Everton’s problem is that they may have to let them.
The case for Everton
David Moyes has a win and two draws from the first three, the last a 2-2 at home to Manchester United rescued in stoppage time by Ainsley Maitland-Niles. That is the pattern of the start: organised, awkward to break down, and capable of a late goal.
The worry is the size of the squad. A quiet summer left Everton with around 18 senior outfield players and one recognised centre-forward after Beto and Iliman Ndiaye moved on. A team that defends well but carries almost no attacking depth can hold a game at 0-0 for an hour and then have nothing to change it with.
The prices
Ten UK bookmakers are compared above. Spurs are evens almost everywhere, with BoyleSports the exception at 21/20. The draw runs from 12/5 at William Hill, Bet Victor, Ladbrokes, Coral and 888sport up to 13/5 at Betfred. Everton are 5/2 at most books and 13/5 at Betfred.
Betfred are top of the market on both the draw and the away win at 13/5 apiece. On a £10 stake the draw at 13/5 returns £36 against £34 at 12/5, so the price you take matters more than it looks on a market this tight. Virgin Bet are the outlier the other way, pricing Spurs at a shade under evens and the draw at around 9/4.
Nobody rates Spurs shorter than evens, which for a home favourite against a mid-table side is a generous line. The goal drought is in the price.
What looks the smart angle
Spurs at evens asks you to back a team that has not scored in a month to beat a side that has conceded late and often looked hard to open up. The head-to-head says they probably will. It is not a price that pays you for the risk that they do not.
The draw at 13/5 is the part of this market that looks underrated. Two of Everton’s three games have ended level, Spurs’ last outing was a 0-0, and the game script here, a nervy home side against a deep block with no plan B, is the kind that stays at 0-0 or 1-1. This is analysis and opinion, not a prediction, and a Spurs side that clicks could win this three-nil. On the prices, the level outcome is the one being underrated.
The offers, and where the odds line bites
Three welcome offers sit below this article, and the minimum-odds rule on each one decides what you can actually use them on here.
Ad: new William Hill customers registering with promo code R30 can bet £10 and get £30 in free bets, paid as 3 x £10 once the qualifying bet settles. The minimum odds are 1/2 (1.5), so every outcome in this match qualifies, Spurs at evens included. The catch is the deposit method: PayPal, Apple Pay, Skrill, Neteller and Paysafe are all excluded, so it has to be a debit card. Free bets last 7 days.
Ad: new Betfred customers can bet £10 and get £50 in free bets, split as £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets, credited within 24 hours of the qualifying bet settling. Here the odds bar is Evens (2.0) or greater. Spurs at exactly evens sits right on the line, so if the price shortens to 1.90 before you place, backing the home win no longer triggers the offer. The draw at 13/5 and Everton at 13/5 both clear it with room to spare. Debit card deposits only, 7-day expiry on the free bets.
Ad: new Virgin Bet members can bet £10 and get £20 in free bets plus 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens. Minimum odds are 1/2 (1.5) again, so all three outcomes count. The extra step is acceptance: the tokens arrive as a pop-up you have to accept within 7 days, then use within 7 days of that. Free bet stakes are not returned on any of the three offers.
Betfred’s £50 is the biggest of the three, but on this match it is only reachable by backing the draw or Everton, because the favourite is too short to qualify. William Hill’s £30 is the one a bet on any outcome here, Spurs included, will trigger. Worth knowing before you deposit rather than after.
Elsewhere this weekend
Saturday is a full Premier League card: Aston Villa v Nottingham Forest, Liverpool v Fulham and Chelsea v Hull City all kick off at 3pm, with Sunderland v Arsenal under the lights at 8pm. The 250th running of the St Leger is at Doncaster the same afternoon, the feature of the Betfred St Leger Festival. Manchester United v Manchester City follows on Sunday.
If this is the game that gets you opening an account, William Hill’s £30 with code R30 is the offer any bet in this match will trigger, and Betfred’s £50 across sports and Bet Builder free bets is the largest if you are backing the draw or Everton.
