Tottenham host Aston Villa at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 19 September, kick-off 12.30pm UK time, in a fixture that neither club would have circled with excitement when the season began. Spurs sit 17th on two points from four games. Villa are 19th on one point from four. Between them they have scored twice in the Premier League all season, and this is the closest thing round five has to a straight fight for bottom of the table.
The case for Tottenham
Home advantage and a longer injury list to work around. Roberto De Zerbi’s side have not scored in the league since the opening weeks, with back-to-back 0-0 draws against Everton and Nottingham Forest either side of a 3-0 defeat at Brentford and a 2-0 loss to Newcastle. A 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic is the only goals anyone at the club has celebrated recently, and that was against League One opposition. Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simons and Mykhailo Mudryk are all out injured, with Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie being managed carefully, which leaves De Zerbi short of the creative players who were supposed to justify a heavy summer outlay.
The case for Aston Villa
Villa arrive with the worse points tally but a recent head-to-head record that runs the other way: they have won four of the last five meetings with Tottenham, including both fixtures last season. Unai Emery’s side have lost three of their four league games, beating only Coventry City, and go into this one with the club reportedly holding internal talks over his position after the worst possible start. Amadou Onana, Leon Goretzka, Pau Torres and Brian Madjo are all unavailable, and Villa have managed one clean sheet all season. The saving grace is that Emery has been here before: last season’s Villa also won nothing from their first five games and finished fourth.
The prices
Ten UK bookmakers are compared above. Tottenham are the shortest price at evens with Betfred, drifting out to 20/21 or 10/11 elsewhere, with Villa sitting between 5/2 and 27/10 across the board. The draw is the part of the market that stands out: 11/4 with Betfred, down to 5/2 with William Hill, Paddy Power, Bet Victor, Ladbrokes and 888sport. Every price here clears the minimum-odds requirement on all three of this site’s welcome offers, Betfred’s Evens-or-greater bar included, since Tottenham are priced at exactly 2.0 with Betfred itself.
What looks the smart angle
Two sides that cannot score, meeting at a ground where the home team has gone four league games without a goal: that points at a low-scoring afternoon before anything else is considered. Villa’s head-to-head record against Tottenham, four wins from the last five, is the detail that complicates backing the home side as a short-priced favourite here, especially with three first-choice players missing from De Zerbi’s forward line. The draw at 11/4 with Betfred, or 5/2 with several others, prices in that tension better than either team winning outright. This is analysis and opinion, not a prediction, and a Villa side with only one clean sheet all season is just as capable of leaking a goal at the other end.
The offers, and where they line up with this match
Three welcome offers sit below this article, and every price in the table above is high enough to qualify for all of them, regardless of which side of the game or the draw you fancy.
Ad: new William Hill customers registering with promo code R30 can bet £10 and get £30 in free bets, paid as 3 x £10 once the qualifying bet settles. The minimum odds are 1/2 (1.5), so Tottenham at evens, the draw at up to 11/4 and Villa at up to 27/10 all clear it with room to spare. Deposits have to be by debit card, since PayPal, Apple Pay, Skrill, Neteller and Paysafe are all excluded, and the free bets last 7 days once credited.
Ad: new Betfred customers can bet £10 and get £50 in free bets, split as £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets, credited within 24 hours of the qualifying bet settling. The bar here is Evens (2.0) or greater, and Betfred’s own price on Tottenham sits exactly there, so the qualifying bet works on any of the three outcomes with this firm.
Ad: new Virgin Bet members can bet £10 and get £20 in free bets plus 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens. Minimum odds are 1/2 (1.5) again, so this match qualifies comfortably whichever way it goes. The free bets arrive as a pop-up notification that has to be accepted within 7 days, then used within a further 7 days, and free bet stakes are not returned on any of the three offers above.
Betfred’s £50 remains the largest package of the three, and on a match with two sides struggling to score, William Hill’s £30 and Virgin Bet’s £20 plus Bet Builder tokens are both worth having as a second account for the same weekend of football.
Elsewhere this weekend
Saturday’s other fixtures include Brighton hosting Arsenal, Newcastle against promoted Hull City, and Everton away at Ipswich Town, before Sunday brings Nottingham Forest v Coventry City. The following weekend, Bournemouth host Liverpool and Manchester City face Sunderland, with Fulham v Manchester United completing round six on the Sunday.
If this is the game that gets you opening an account, Betfred’s £50 across sports and Bet Builder free bets is the largest of the three, with William Hill’s £30 with code R30 and Virgin Bet’s £20 plus Bet Builder tokens both clearing the same bar on this fixture.
