Ukraine play Northern Ireland at the Anton Malatinský Stadium in Trnava on Friday 2 October, kick-off 19:45 UK time, in the third round of Nations League B Group 2. Ukraine have been playing their home games in Slovakia since 2022, so this is a home fixture in name and a neutral ground in practice. Both teams have four points from two games and share top spot, which makes this the game that decides who leads the group going into the final round.
Ukraine opened with a 1-0 win over Hungary on 25 September, then drew 0-0 with Georgia three days later. Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland did almost exactly the same in reverse: a 1-0 win over Georgia, then a goalless draw with Hungary at Windsor Park. Four points each, one goal each, and two clean sheets each.
The case for Ukraine
The record and the squad. Ukraine have won three of the six meetings between the sides, drawn two and lost one, with the last coming in a friendly in June 2021 that Ukraine won 1-0. They report a fully fit squad with no suspensions, which is not something either side could say a week ago. Trnava is not Kyiv, but it is a ground Ukraine know well by now, and a home crowd of sorts.
The case for Northern Ireland
O’Neill’s side have conceded nothing in two games and have already won away in this group. That is the template: keep it at nil, take the one chance that comes. Northern Ireland came out of Tbilisi with three points doing exactly that, and a point here would leave them level at the top with a game at home still to come. The concern is the same one Ukraine have. Neither team is creating much: Ukraine have managed five shots on target across their two matches, and Northern Ireland’s attack has produced a single goal.
What looks the smart angle
All three of our sportsbook partners price this game, and they are close to identical on Northern Ireland. Virgin Bet and Betfred both go 16/5 (4.20) on the visitors, with William Hill a touch shorter at 3/1 (4.00). On Ukraine, Virgin Bet lead at 1.86 from William Hill at 17/20 (1.85) and Betfred at 5/6 (1.83). The draw is best at Betfred at 11/5 (3.20), against 3.15 at Virgin Bet and 21/10 (3.10) at William Hill. Among the books we have no deal with, BoyleSports push Ukraine out to 19/20 (1.95) and go 10/3 (4.33) on Northern Ireland, the biggest prices in the table, while Coral, Ladbrokes and Unibet go 12/5 (3.40) on the draw.
Two sides with one goal each in two games, both defending well, both on four points. The draw at 11/5 is the price that matches the evidence rather than the reputations, and it is the outcome that suits Northern Ireland’s approach as much as it frustrates them. Ukraine at around 17/20 to 1.86 asks you to back a team that has scored once in 180 minutes to break down a defence that has not been breached at all. Northern Ireland at 16/5 is the outsider price in a game where the two teams have produced identical results. That is opinion on the prices as they stand, not a prediction.
We hold no deal with Coral, Ladbrokes, Unibet, BoyleSports, Casumo, LeoVegas or Betway, which is why their prices do not link out.

Ad: William Hill’s bet £10, get £30 in free bets has the lowest qualifying bar of our three partners at 1/2 (1.5), and every outcome in this game clears it comfortably, including Ukraine at 17/20. It needs promo code R30 and a debit card deposit, and pays three £10 free bets that expire seven days after they land. Note that the free bet stake is not returned with any winnings.
Betfred’s bet £10, get £50 in free bets is the biggest of the three but has the highest bar: the qualifying bet must be at Evens (2.0) or bigger. Ukraine at 5/6 do not clear it. Northern Ireland at 16/5 and the draw at 11/5 both do, and Betfred are the best partner price on the draw. The £50 is paid as £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets, within 24 hours of settlement, valid seven days, debit card deposit required. Virgin Bet’s welcome offer pays £20 in free bets plus 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens for a £10 deposit and a £10+ bet at 1/2 (1.5) or bigger, and Virgin Bet hold the best partner price on Ukraine.
Away from the football, Virgin Bet runs 100 free spins on Eye of Horus and 100 free spins on King Kong Cash Even Bigger Bananas 2, both paying winnings as cash with no cap, while William Hill’s 50 free spins on Mining Pots of Gold needs code M50 and a £10 stake, expires 24 hours after issue and caps winnings at £30.
