Coventry City host Newcastle United on Monday 12 October, kick-off 8pm UK time, the last game of the first Premier League weekend after the international break. It is the first top-flight meeting between the clubs since 2000-01, the season that ended with Coventry’s relegation. They spent the next 25 years outside the Premier League, and Frank Lampard brought them back.
The table after five games is not kind to them. Coventry are 19th with three points, one win and four defeats, and they have scored one goal. Newcastle are 11th on eight points from two wins, two draws and a defeat, with nine scored and nine conceded. Both sides have a game in hand on the rest of the division after the weekend’s results, and a Newcastle win would lift them to 11 points, one clear of the three clubs on 10 in fourth to sixth.
The case for Coventry
Their one win came last time out, 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on 19 September, and it was their first clean sheet of the season. The other four games tell the story of a promoted side finding its level: 3-0 at Arsenal, 1-0 at Manchester City, 1-0 at home to Hull City and 5-0 at home to Brighton. The defeat at Manchester City, who have won all five, was by a single goal.
Coventry spent around £138.6 million over the summer, and much of it went on the parts of the side that have not clicked yet. Sidiki Cherif came from Fenerbahçe for £20.5 million and Taiwo Awoniyi from Forest for £9 million to fix a front line, Loum Tchaouna arrived from Burnley for £20 million, and Caleb Yirenkyi came in from Nordsjælland for £23.1 million. Carl Rushworth, signed from Brighton for £22.5 million, is the goalkeeper. A two-week break gave Lampard time to work with that group, and a home game under lights is the obvious place to start scoring. He will have to do it without Awoniyi, who is suspended after his red card against Brighton, while Haji Wright and Aurele Amenda are injured and Josh Eccles has a calf problem. There is better news at full-back: Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Milan van Ewijk are both back in training.
The case for Newcastle
Newcastle are a different club from the one that finished last season. Eddie Howe stepped down on 31 July and Matthias Jaissle was appointed on 5 August. Sandro Tonali went to Tottenham for £100 million, Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal for £75 million and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3 million. In came Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for £51 million, Nico González from Manchester City for £47 million, Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim, Amar Dedić from Benfica and Aladji Bamba from Monaco.
The results so far reflect a rebuild in progress. They won 2-0 at Tottenham on 29 August, and they lost 4-1 at Leeds on 14 September. They score, and they concede. The last game before the break was a 2-1 home win over Hull. Tino Livramento is out and Anthony Elanga is a doubt with a thigh injury, but Joelinton and Dan Burn are back in training, and Jaissle has said he is managing workloads after the break. Against a side that has managed one goal in five games, the first half of that sentence matters more than the second, and the bookmakers agree: Newcastle are favourites everywhere.
What looks the smart angle
On the morning of the game Betfred and William Hill are level as the biggest partner prices on Newcastle at 23/20 (2.15), with Virgin Bet at 9/8 (2.12). Betfred have pulled clear on the draw at 11/4 (3.75), against 5/2 (3.50) at Virgin Bet and 12/5 (3.40) at William Hill. Betfred and William Hill both go 21/10 (3.10) on Coventry, with Virgin Bet at 41/20 (3.05). Among the books we have no deal with, BoyleSports go 9/4 (3.25) on Coventry, and Unibet’s 5/4 (2.25) is the biggest Newcastle price in the table.
Our view is that the market has this about right on the favourite and is underrating the draw. Three of Coventry’s five games have been settled by a single goal, and they have scored in only one of them. Newcastle away from home under a new manager have been unpredictable, and Elanga’s absence takes pace out of their attack. The draw at 11/4 with Betfred is the price that fits a tight, nervy Monday night. If you think Coventry’s spending is about to show, 21/10 with Betfred or William Hill is the best of the partner home prices. This is opinion on prices refreshed on the morning of 12 October, not a prediction, and the market can still move before kick-off.
We hold no deal with Sky Bet, Paddy Power, Coral, Ladbrokes, Unibet, 888sport or BoyleSports, which is why their prices do not link out.
