Atlético Madrid host Manchester United at the Metropolitano on Tuesday 13 October, kick-off 8pm UK time. It is matchday 2 of the Champions League league phase, played more than a month after the first round because of the long autumn international window. The two clubs went into the break in very different shape. Atlético were second in La Liga. United were 12th in the Premier League.
The case for Atlético Madrid
Diego Simeone’s side went into the international break with 16 points from seven La Liga games: five wins, one draw and one defeat. The last game before the break was a 2-1 win over Real Madrid, and the two before that were 3-0 against Real Sociedad and 4-0 against Osasuna. The only league defeat was a 3-0 loss at Athletic Bilbao. Álex Baena is the top scorer with four goals in all competitions, and Jonathan David has been their most influential forward. This is also the first Atlético season since 2020-21 without Antoine Griezmann, who left for Orlando City in MLS.
The one blot is Europe. Atlético opened the league phase with a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, so they start this game on zero points and with a clear need to win at home. They had a league trip to Alavés at the weekend in between.
The case for Manchester United
United are the side with the better Champions League start: a 4-0 win over Sabah on matchday 1 put them fourth in the early table. Domestic form is the problem. Michael Carrick’s side have five points from five Premier League games, with one win, two draws and two defeats, and they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton. Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham, who were bottom going into the game, made it six points from six games and left United 13th.
The injury list is long. Manuel Ugarte is out long term. Carrick confirmed before the Spurs game that Patrick Dorgu is likely to miss a number of weeks with the hamstring problem he picked up playing for Denmark, and that Benjamin Šeško is further away with a recurring shin injury. Noussair Mazraoui was a doubt after a knock, and Matthijs de Ligt is closing in on a return from a back problem that has kept him out since last season. United’s record against Atlético is thin: the only competitive meetings came in the 1991-92 Cup Winners’ Cup, when Atlético won 3-0 in Madrid and drew 1-1 at Old Trafford.
What looks the smart angle
The market moved hard towards Atlético after the first prices went up. They were around 23/20 on Thursday and were odds-on everywhere by Monday, with United out from 2/1 to as big as 5/2. On matchday morning it has eased back a touch on both sides and the draw has shortened. Betfred have the best partner prices on Atlético at 19/20 (1.95) and on the draw at 11/4 (3.75), against 10/11 (1.91) and 13/5 (3.60) at William Hill. Virgin Bet have the best partner price on United at 27/10 (3.70), with Betfred and William Hill both at 13/5 (3.60). Virgin Bet are the shortest partner on Atlético at 1.86, about 6/7. Among books we have no deal with, BoyleSports go 14/5 (3.80) on United, the biggest away price in the table, and Unibet match Betfred’s 19/20 on the home win.
United’s draw with Spurs and the confirmed absences of Dorgu and Šeško explain most of the drift. Atlético at 19/20 is a short price for a side that lost its opening Champions League game, and the value case for the home win has gone with the move. The case for United at 27/10 rests on a side that has looked better in Europe than at home, and on Atlético carrying the pressure of a zero-point start. The draw at 11/4 with Betfred is still the price we find most interesting, given Atlético’s habit under Simeone of controlling big European nights rather than chasing them, though it is shorter than the 3/1 available on Monday. That is opinion on the prices as they stood on the morning of Tuesday 13 October, not a prediction, and the market can still move before kick-off.
We hold no deal with Sky Bet, Paddy Power, Coral, Ladbrokes, Unibet, 888sport or BoyleSports, which is why their prices do not link out.

The sportsbook offers for a Tuesday in Madrid
All three partners price this game. Atlético are now odds-on, which matters for one of the three offers below.
Ad: Betfred’s bet £10, get £50 in free bets is the biggest of the three, and it carries the best partner prices on the home win and the draw. The first bet has to be £10 or more at Evens (2.0) or bigger and settle within seven days, which United at 13/5 and the draw at 11/4 both do. Atlético at 19/20 fall just short, so a home-win backer would not qualify with this one. You get £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets within 24 hours of settlement, valid for seven days. The deposit has to be made by debit card.
William Hill’s bet £10, get £30 in free bets sets a lower bar of 1/2 (1.5), which Atlético at 10/11 clear, so this is the partner offer that works for a home-win bet. It needs promo code R30 at registration, a first deposit of £10 or more and a £10 single on any sports market. Three £10 free bets follow once the bet settles, valid for seven days and to be used in full. PayPal, Skrill, NETELLER, Apple Pay and several other deposit methods do not count.
Virgin Bet’s welcome offer has the same 1/2 bar, so a bet on Atlético counts here too, and Virgin Bet have the best partner price on United at 27/10. Deposit £10, then within 14 days of registering place a £10+ bet at 1/2 or bigger, and you get 2 x £10 sportsbook free bets plus 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens. You have seven days to accept them and seven more to use them. The Bet Builder tokens need a single selection at Evens or bigger.
For the build-up, Virgin Bet also runs 100 free spins on Eye of Horus and 100 free spins on King Kong Cash Even Bigger Bananas 2, both paying winnings as cash with no cap. William Hill’s 50 free spins on Mining Pots of Gold needs code M50 and a £10 stake, and the terms are tighter: 24 hours to use the spins and a £30 cap on winnings.
If you think Simeone’s side and United cancel each other out, claim the Betfred welcome offer here and take the best partner price on the draw. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
