Manchester City host Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad on Wednesday 14 October, kick-off 8pm UK time. It is matchday 2 of the Champions League league phase and the biggest fixture of the round. PSG have won the competition in each of the last two seasons. City are top of the Premier League with a perfect record under their new manager.
The case for Manchester City
Enzo Maresca took over when Pep Guardiola resigned, and the start has been as good as it gets: six Premier League wins from six, 18 points, 16 goals scored and five conceded, including a 1-0 win at Old Trafford and a 3-0 win at Anfield on Sunday 11 October. Erling Haaland leads the league’s scoring chart with five, and he scored twice in the 2-0 win over Porto on matchday 1. Rayan Cherki has three league goals.
The questions are fitness and the calendar. Haaland was substituted after 67 minutes of Norway’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal on 4 October, which Norway’s coach said was planned. Antoine Semenyo pulled out of the Ghana squad with an ankle problem and Nico O’Reilly withdrew from England duty. City came through the trip to Liverpool on Sunday without conceding, three days before this. Off the pitch, an independent commission found City guilty on all but one of the 115 Premier League charges on 25 September. No sanction has been set and City are expected to appeal.
The case for Paris Saint-Germain
Luis Enrique’s side opened their defence with a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes and top the early table on goal difference. Ferran Torres has seven goals in all competitions. The domestic picture is less tidy. PSG went into the international break sixth in Ligue 1 with eight points from five games: draws at Rennes and Lille, a 2-1 home defeat to Monaco, then wins at Brest and at Marseille. Luis Enrique has managed Ousmane Dembélé’s minutes carefully since the start of the season.
The recent history between these clubs runs both ways. City beat PSG 2-0 and 2-1 in the 2021 semi-final. The most recent meeting, in the league phase in January 2025, went 4-2 to PSG in Paris after City had led 2-0. PSG host Barcelona six days after this game, so this is the first of two very big nights in a week for them.
What looks the smart angle
The market edged towards PSG after the first prices went up and has barely moved since. William Hill and Betfred are level as the biggest partner prices on City at 23/20 (2.15), with Virgin Bet at 2.06, about 21/20. Betfred have the best partner price on PSG at 2/1 (3.00), ahead of William Hill’s 19/10 (2.90) and Virgin Bet’s 2.88, about 15/8, and the best partner draw at 3/1 (4.00), against 29/10 (3.90) at Virgin Bet and 14/5 (3.80) at William Hill. Among books we have no deal with, Coral go 6/5 (2.20) on City, the biggest home price in the table, and Paddy Power match Betfred’s 2/1 on PSG.
City are favourites because of the perfect start, and 23/20 is not a short price for a side that has won all six league games and just won 3-0 at Anfield. The case for PSG at 2/1 is that they are the holders, they scored six on matchday 1, and their league form understates a squad that has been rotated hard. The draw at 3/1 is the number that looks most generous to us in a game between two sides that both have a huge fixture either side of it. That is opinion on the prices as they stood on Tuesday 13 October, not a prediction, and the market can still move before kick-off.
We hold no deal with Sky Bet, Paddy Power, Coral, Ladbrokes, Unibet, 888sport or BoyleSports, which is why their prices do not link out.
