Leeds United host Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday 18 October, kick-off 2pm UK time. The Roses rivalry has rarely looked like this: on current form, the table has turned it upside down. Leeds are seventh on nine points. United are 13th on six, three points and six places behind a side that only came back up to the Premier League in 2025.
United also arrive on a short turnaround. They play Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, five days before this, while Leeds have had the week to prepare after a defeat at Arsenal.
The case for Leeds
Daniel Farke’s side have lost one league game in six, and that was the 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on 10 October, against a side second in the table. The rest of the record is two wins and three draws, eight goals scored and five conceded. Five conceded is joint-fewest in the division, level with Manchester City, Arsenal, Brighton and Everton, which is a remarkable number for a club in its second season back.
The best performance came at Elland Road, a 4-1 win over Newcastle on 14 September. Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads the line, and Farke’s side are set up to make Elland Road an uncomfortable place to visit. Against a United team that has won once all season and will have played in Madrid five days earlier, the bookmakers make Leeds narrow favourites.
The case for Manchester United
Michael Carrick’s side have one league win from six, three draws and two defeats, nine scored and nine conceded. The 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham on 10 October summed up the problem: Spurs had not won a league game all season and still left Old Trafford with a point.
The injury list is the main reason. Manuel Ugarte is out long term. Carrick has said Patrick Dorgu is likely to miss a number of weeks with a hamstring injury and that Benjamin Šeško is further away with a recurring shin problem. Noussair Mazraoui was a doubt after a knock, and Amad Diallo has not played this season because of an ankle injury. The better news is that Matthijs de Ligt is close to a return after a long lay-off with a back problem. What United do have is Bruno Fernandes, and a side with his range of passing is never out of a game against anyone. How much they have left after Madrid is the open question.
What looks the smart angle
The partner prices split three ways. William Hill have the biggest price on United in the whole table at 17/10 (2.70), ahead of Betfred’s 13/8 (2.62) and Virgin Bet’s 3/2 (2.50). Betfred have the best partner prices on the other two outcomes: Leeds at 3/2 (2.50), a fraction ahead of Virgin Bet’s 2.48 and clear of William Hill’s 7/5 (2.40), and the draw at 11/4 (3.75), against 51/20 (3.55) at Virgin Bet and 5/2 (3.50) at William Hill. Among the books we have no deal with, Coral, Ladbrokes, Unibet and BoyleSports all go 3/2 on Leeds, and 888sport match William Hill’s 17/10 on United.
Our view is that the market has Leeds about right as favourites, but not by much. A side with the joint-best defensive record in the league, at home, against a United team with one win in six and a midweek trip to Madrid in its legs, has a real case at 3/2. The price that interests us is United at 17/10 with William Hill, only because the market seems to be pricing in the injury list twice: once in the table and once in the odds. If Fernandes plays and United bring the energy they found in Europe, that is a generous number. The draw at 11/4 with Betfred is the cautious option in a fixture where neither side has been scoring freely. This is opinion on prices taken on 11 October, not a prediction, and the Atlético result will move this market before kick-off.
We hold no deal with Sky Bet, Paddy Power, Coral, Ladbrokes, Unibet, 888sport or BoyleSports, which is why their prices do not link out.
