Tottenham host Coventry City on Monday 19 October, kick-off 8pm UK time, the last game of the Premier League’s seventh round. It is not the mismatch the fixture list might suggest. Spurs have not won a league game this season. Coventry, who lost their first four after promotion, have now won two in a row, and the second was a 4-1 win over Newcastle a week before this.
It is also the first top-flight meeting between the clubs since the 2000-01 season, the one that ended with Coventry’s relegation and a 25-year absence from the Premier League.
The case for Tottenham
The case for Spurs is mostly the price of the opposition and the venue. Roberto De Zerbi’s side have three points from six games: goalless draws with Everton and Nottingham Forest, defeats to Brentford, Newcastle and Aston Villa, and a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on 10 October. Their last Premier League win was 1-0 against Everton on 24 May.
That draw at United was the best they have looked. Spurs had the better of the chances, went behind to Bryan Mbeumo’s goal 17 minutes from time against the run of play, and equalised through Dominic Solanke’s header in stoppage time. It was their first away league goal since May. It came with a cost: Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for a headbutt on Luke Shaw, so he misses this game. Spurs went to Old Trafford without Pedro Porro, Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mykhailo Mudryk, and the squad is still thin in midfield and at full-back.
The point lifted Spurs to 18th, above the drop zone only on goals scored. A home game against a promoted side is the obvious place for a first win.
The case for Coventry
Frank Lampard’s side started with four straight defeats and no goals: 3-0 at Arsenal, 1-0 at Manchester City, 1-0 at home to Hull City and 5-0 at home to Brighton. Since then they have won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on 19 September and beaten Newcastle 4-1 at the CBS Arena on 12 October. That was their first home Premier League win in more than 25 years. Substitute Ellis Simms restored a two-goal lead on 81 minutes after Sven Botman’s strike had given Newcastle hope, and Stephen Mfuni added a fourth four minutes from time.
The numbers from that night are worth reading carefully. Newcastle had 67% of the ball and 19 shots to Coventry’s nine. Lampard called it a “complete performance”. It was also a game in which a side with plenty of the ball could not break down a deep block, which is the same problem Spurs have had for most of the season.
Coventry have six points from six games, five goals scored and 11 conceded. The defensive record away from home is the weakness: they shipped three at Arsenal and lost at City, though only by one goal.
What looks the smart angle
William Hill have the best partner price on Spurs at 1/2 (1.50), ahead of Virgin Bet at 1.46 and Betfred at 4/9 (1.44). Betfred have the best partner prices on the other two outcomes: 18/5 (4.60) on the draw and 11/2 (6.50) on Coventry, against 10/3 (4.33) and 5/1 (6.00) at William Hill and 4.30 and 6.10 at Virgin Bet. Among books we have no deal with, Coral match Betfred’s 18/5 and 11/2, and 888sport match William Hill’s 1/2 on Spurs.
Spurs at 1/2 is a price for a team that wins most home games against promoted sides. This Spurs team has not won any game in the league since May, and that price looks short to us. Coventry at 11/2 is the other end of it: a side that has just found a way to win, against a home side whose crowd will turn quickly if the first goal does not come. The draw at 18/5 with Betfred is the price we would look at first. Spurs have drawn three of six, Coventry defend deep away from home, and neither side has scored freely. That is opinion on the prices as they stood on Tuesday 13 October, not a prediction. Both teams have a week to recover, and the market will move with team news.
We hold no deal with Coral, Sky Bet, Paddy Power, Unibet, Ladbrokes, 888sport or BoyleSports, which is why their prices do not link out.

This game splits the three partner offers neatly, because their qualifying odds sit either side of the home price.
Ad: William Hill’s bet £10, get £30 in free bets is the one that works for a Spurs backer. Its minimum is 1/2, and William Hill’s Spurs price is exactly 1/2, so a £10 single on the home win qualifies. Register with promo code R30, deposit £10 or more and place the £10 single from your main balance. Three £10 free bets follow once it settles, valid for seven days and to be used in full. PayPal, Skrill, NETELLER, Apple Pay and several other deposit methods are excluded.
Betfred’s bet £10, get £50 in free bets is the largest package and carries the best partner prices on the draw and on Coventry. Its first bet has to be at Evens (2.0) or bigger, so Spurs at 4/9 will not trigger it, but the draw at 18/5 and Coventry at 11/2 both do. You get £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets within 24 hours of the bet settling, valid seven days. The deposit has to be by debit card, and the qualifying bet must settle within seven days.
Virgin Bet’s welcome offer needs a £10+ cash bet at 1/2 (1.5) or bigger within 14 days of registering. Virgin Bet’s Spurs price of 1.46 falls just short of that, so here it is the draw or Coventry that qualify. You get 2 x £10 sportsbook free bets and 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens, with seven days to accept them and seven to use them. The Bet Builder tokens need a single selection at Evens or bigger.
For the hours before a late kick-off, William Hill’s 50 free spins on Mining Pots of Gold needs code M50 and a £10 stake, with 24 hours to use the spins and a £30 cap on winnings. Virgin Bet’s 100 free spins on Eye of Horus and 100 free spins on King Kong Cash Even Bigger Bananas 2 both pay winnings as cash with no cap.
If you think Spurs finally get off the mark, claim the William Hill welcome offer here and take the best partner price on the home win. If you side with the draw, Betfred’s 18/5 is the bigger number. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
