Chelsea host Manchester United on Saturday 31 October, kick-off 12.30pm UK time at Stamford Bridge. On paper it is fifth against 16th. In practice both clubs come in after a home defeat that hurt, and one of the two managers may not be in the same job by kick-off.
The case for Chelsea
Xabi Alonso’s side are fifth on 13 points: four wins, a draw and three defeats, with 17 goals scored and 15 conceded. The last of those defeats was 2-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday, Alonso’s first home loss as Chelsea coach. Mike Penders punched a corner into his own net on 77 minutes and Mathys Tel scored on 87.
The good news for Chelsea is that Cole Palmer is available. He was sent off for a second booking against Spurs, but a red card in the league carries over to domestic cups, so he served the one-match ban in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool and returns here. Pre-match previews on Thursday and Friday expected him to start. Mike Penders stays in goal, and Reece James, Jamie Gittens and Maxence Lacroix are reported out, with Moises Caicedo and Jorrel Hato listed as doubts. Joao Pedro missed the Spurs game injured, so the forward line is still the selection to watch.
Chelsea score goals. Seventeen in eight league games is the third-best total in the division, behind Brighton and Manchester City. The defending is the problem: Sky Sports counted eight set-piece goals conceded, double any other team.
The case for Manchester United
Michael Carrick’s side have one league win in eight: one win, four draws and three defeats, seven points, 16th and a point above the bottom three. The last week was the worst of the season. They lost 4-1 at Como in midweek, and then 3-0 at home to Bournemouth on Sunday, with Rayan scoring on 38 minutes, Marcus Tavernier on 43 and Evanilson on 71.
Carrick left Bruno Fernandes out of the side against Bournemouth, after the captain criticised the team’s tactics following the Como defeat, and did not bring him on. Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both said on Sky that they expected Carrick to lose his job. The Guardian reported on Saturday that the club’s sporting director, Jason Wilcox, sees Eddie Howe as his preferred replacement. Carrick said after the game he was not saying goodbye. None of that had been confirmed by the club when we wrote this on Monday 26 October.
By Thursday’s press conference the picture had calmed. Carrick confirmed that Fernandes is available again, after clear-the-air talks with the captain, and that Kobbie Mainoo is back in contention. Benjamin Sesko is still out with a shin injury. Reports after the press conference said Carrick’s position was safe for now.
The case for United is the one that always applies to a side in this state. The prices assume a team that keeps losing, and a change of manager, or a recall for the captain, can produce a reaction that the market is slow to price.
What looks the smart angle
On Friday 30 October, Betfred and William Hill share the best partner price on Chelsea at 5/6 (1.83). Betfred are best among the partners on the draw at 3/1 (4.00), and Virgin Bet on United at 31/10 (4.10). Among books we have no deal with, most now go 3/1 (4.00) on United, after several were at 16/5 earlier in the week.
Chelsea at 5/6 is the price of a side expected to win a little over half the time. That still looks short for a team that just lost at home, conceded heavily from set pieces, and may lack a striker. United shortened slightly once the Fernandes news came out, which is the market pricing in the captain’s return. As opinion, the draw at 3/1 with Betfred is the price we would look at first, with United at 31/10 a close second now the manager question has gone quiet. That is opinion on the prices as they stood on Friday morning, not a prediction.
We hold no deal with Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Sky Bet, Unibet, 888sport or Bet Victor, which is why their prices do not link out.

The sportsbook offers for a Saturday lunchtime kick-off
This game splits the three partner offers, because Chelsea’s price sits under one qualifying minimum and above the other two.
Ad: William Hill’s bet £10, get £30 in free bets shares the best partner price on Chelsea, and its 1/2 minimum means a £10 single on the home win at 5/6 qualifies. Register with promo code R30, deposit £10 or more and place the bet from your main balance. Three £10 free bets follow once it settles, valid for seven days and to be used in full. PayPal, Skrill, NETELLER, Apple Pay and several other deposit methods are excluded.
Betfred’s bet £10, get £50 in free bets is the biggest package and has the best partner price on the draw. Its first bet has to be at Evens (2.0) or bigger, so Chelsea at 5/6 will not trigger it, but the draw at 3/1 and United at 11/4 (3.75) both do. You get £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets within 24 hours of the bet settling, valid seven days. The deposit has to be by debit card.
Virgin Bet’s welcome offer has the best partner price on United. It needs a £10 deposit and a £10+ cash bet at 1/2 (1.5) or bigger within 14 days of registering, so every outcome qualifies. You get 2 x £10 sportsbook free bets and 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens, with seven days to accept them and seven to use them.
For the morning before kick-off, William Hill’s 50 free spins on Mining Pots of Gold needs code M50 and a £10 stake, with 24 hours to use the spins and a £30 cap on winnings. Virgin Bet’s 100 free spins on Eye of Horus and 100 free spins on King Kong Cash Even Bigger Bananas 2 both pay winnings as cash with no cap.
If you think Chelsea bounce back, claim the William Hill welcome offer here and take 5/6. If you side with the draw, Betfred’s 3/1 is the bigger number and qualifies for the larger offer. Any view here is opinion, not a tip. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
