Liverpool host Arsenal on Sunday 1 November, kick-off 4.30pm UK time at Anfield. It is the biggest game of the Premier League weekend. Arsenal, the champions, are level on 21 points with Manchester City at the top after eight games. Liverpool are fourth on 15 and have won four in a row. A home win cuts the gap to three points.
The market makes Arsenal favourites at Anfield, which says plenty about how the first two months have gone for each side.
The case for Liverpool
Andoni Iraola’s side have won eight of their last ten games since the start of September, and the last four in a row. The latest was 2-0 against Brighton at Anfield on 25 October: Pascal Gross turned Florian Wirtz’s shot into his own net on 17 minutes and Alexander Isak scored four minutes later from Bradley Barcola’s cut-back. It was Iraola’s first home league win as Liverpool head coach.
The league record is four wins, three draws and one defeat, with 11 goals scored and eight conceded. One defeat is the joint-best record in the league; the three draws are why Liverpool sit six points back.
The fitness question is Wirtz. He went off after 64 minutes against Brighton with a twisted ankle. He said he thought it would be alright, and Iraola said the club needed to check how serious it was. Liverpool also had a Carabao Cup tie with Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday. Going into the weekend, previews list Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley as out. Dominik Szoboszlai has a hamstring problem and is unlikely to play, and reports split on whether Wirtz’s ankle has cleared.
The case for Arsenal
Mikel Arteta’s side have won seven of eight league games, scored 13 and conceded five, the best defensive record in the division. They beat Everton 2-0 at the Emirates on 24 October: Ezri Konsa scored his first goal for the club after seven minutes, bundling in after a corner, and Gabriel headed the second on 68 minutes in his 200th Premier League game for Arsenal. That win, with City losing at Aston Villa the same day, took them level on points at the top. City stay first only on goal difference.
Sky Sports pointed out that Konsa’s goal was Arsenal’s first set-piece goal of the league season, excluding penalties. It took them eight games to score one.
Arsenal played at League Two Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and were knocked out, a day earlier than Liverpool’s cup tie, which at least gives them one extra day to recover. The team news is less kind. Bukayo Saka is reported out with a thigh problem, William Saliba is still weeks away according to Arteta, and Max Dowman is suspended after his red card at Fleetwood, with an appeal unlikely to be heard in time. Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori are being assessed. Noni Madueke is expected to be fit to cover on the right.
What looks the smart angle
On Friday 30 October, William Hill have the best partner price on Liverpool at 19/10 (2.90), with Betfred on 15/8 (2.88). Betfred are best among the partners on the draw at 5/2 (3.50). All three partners go 13/10 (2.30) on Arsenal. Among books we have no deal with, Ladbrokes and Coral still go 2/1 (3.00) on Liverpool, and Paddy Power and Unibet 7/5 (2.40) on Arsenal.
The market has moved Liverpool’s way since Monday, when the best partner price on the home win was 2/1. Arsenal drifting slightly is consistent with the Saka and Saliba news. As opinion, the draw at 5/2 with Betfred is still the price we would look at first. Arsenal concede very little, Liverpool have drawn three of eight, and both sides are missing players. Liverpool at 19/10 is the case for anyone who rates the home side’s run more than Arsenal’s injuries. That is opinion on the prices as they stood on Friday morning, not a prediction.
We hold no deal with Ladbrokes, Coral, Paddy Power, Unibet, Sky Bet, BoyleSports or 888sport, which is why their prices do not link out.
