Newcastle host Everton on Monday 2 November, kick-off 8pm UK time at St James’ Park, live on Sky Sports Premier League. It closes the ninth round of the Premier League, and it is the second meeting between the two clubs in five days. On Thursday night Everton won the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and knocked Newcastle out.
The league table makes it a tight game. Newcastle are eighth on 11 points, Everton 11th on 10.
The case for Newcastle
Newcastle came into the cup tie off a 2-0 league win at Crystal Palace, and their last five league games read L, W, L, L, W. They have scored 12 and conceded 14 in eight league games. The concern is at the back: one clean sheet in their last seven Premier League games.
Thursday’s defeat was a strange one. Newcastle had 28 shots to Everton’s 11 and still lost by two goals. Dan Burn’s header on 89 minutes was the only reward. Matthias Jaissle called it the “story of the season so far” and said his side lack a clinical edge, adding that “being a young team is not an excuse any more.”
The case for Newcastle on Monday is that the cup numbers flatter Everton. A side that creates 28 chances at home to the same opponents should create plenty on its own ground. Lewis Miley was a doubt with a glute problem before the cup tie, and Tino Livramento and Ewen Jaouen are out. Jacob Ramsey, Joelinton and Nico Gonzalez are available again.
The case for Everton
David Moyes’s side took their goals well on Thursday. James Garner scored on 34 minutes after a Newcastle turnover, Hayden Hackney got his first Everton goal on the stroke of half-time, and Thierno Barry finished a counter-attack on 69 minutes. All three came from Newcastle losing the ball or leaving space behind.
The league form is thinner. Everton’s last five read D, W, D, L, L, and they have lost the last two, including 2-0 at Arsenal. Eight league goals in eight games is one of the lowest totals in the division. The defence is the strength: nine conceded is fewer than Newcastle.
Jack Grealish was left out on Thursday for a disciplinary breach, reported as a missed training session. Moyes called it a club decision. Whether he returns on Monday is the selection to watch.
Over the last ten seasons the league meetings are split exactly: seven wins each and four draws in 18 games.
What looks the smart angle
On Monday morning, Newcastle have drifted. Betfred and William Hill go 23/20 (2.15) on them, with Virgin Bet on 2.12. Betfred are best among the partners on the draw at 13/5 (3.60), and Virgin Bet on Everton at 9/4 (3.25), with Betfred on 11/5 (3.20) and William Hill on 21/10 (3.10). Among books we have no deal with, Unibet and Betway match Betfred’s 13/5 on the draw, Casumo go 23/10 (3.30) on Everton, and Unibet, Coral and Ladbrokes 6/5 (2.20) on Newcastle.
Newcastle at 23/20 is the price of a side given about a 47% chance. Their attacking numbers on Thursday support that, and so does the home crowd after a cup exit. Everton at 9/4 is a fair price for a side that just won the same fixture by two goals but scores few in the league. As opinion, the draw at 13/5 with Betfred is the price we would look at first: two sides one point apart, one that cannot finish and one that does not score often. That is opinion on Monday’s prices, not a prediction, and Miley’s and Grealish’s status will move the market.
We hold no deal with Unibet, BoyleSports, Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Sky Bet or Bet Victor, which is why their prices do not link out.
