Barcelona host Aston Villa in the Champions League on Tuesday 3 November, kick-off 8pm UK time at the Spotify Camp Nou. It is the fourth round of the league phase and the first meeting between the clubs in the competition.
The table and the prices tell different stories. Villa have won all three league-phase games and sit level on nine points with Paris Saint-Germain at the top. Barcelona have six. The market still makes Barcelona around 1/4 favourites.
The case for Barcelona
Barcelona are top of La Liga with 27 points from ten games: nine wins and one defeat, 29 goals scored. That one defeat came last time out, 2-1 at Real Madrid on 25 October, five days after they lost 4-2 at PSG in the Champions League. Before Paris they had won 11 in a row in all competitions, and their first two European games were a 5-1 home win over Feyenoord and a 4-1 win at Galatasaray.
Two defeats in a row is a bad week, not a bad season. Barcelona have scored 11 goals in three Champions League games, and Lamine Yamal scored the equaliser in Paris before PSG pulled away late. They answered on Saturday with a 6-1 home win over Alaves, Lamine Yamal scoring twice and making another.
The case for Aston Villa
Unai Emery’s side have the best goal difference in the league phase. They won 3-2 at Club Brugge on matchday one, beat Fenerbahce 6-0 at Villa Park, and beat Viking 3-1 on 21 October, with Ross Barkley, an Emiliano Buendia penalty and an own goal forced by Alysson. That is 12 goals scored and three conceded, a goal difference of +9 that only PSG match.
Domestic form has been good too. Villa beat Manchester City at Villa Park on 24 October, the result that let Arsenal draw level with City at the top. Nicolas Jackson has three goals in this season’s Champions League.
Barcelona are short at the back. Jules Kounde is ruled out with an ankle problem, and Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia are also missing, so Joao Cancelo and Gerard Martin are expected at full-back. Villa travel without Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, both with hamstring injuries.
What looks the smart angle
On Tuesday 3 November, William Hill go 2/7 (1.29) on Barcelona, with Betfred and Virgin Bet on 1/4 (1.25). Betfred have the best partner price on Villa at 8/1 (9.00), against 7/1 (8.00) with Virgin Bet and 13/2 (7.50) with William Hill. Betfred and Virgin Bet share the best partner price on the draw at 11/2 (6.50), with William Hill on 5/1 (6.00). Among books we have no deal with, Paddy Power, Sky Bet and Bet Victor go 6/1 (7.00) on the draw and match Betfred’s 8/1 on Villa.
Barcelona at 1/4 implies about an 80% chance of a home win. The price has drifted slightly since Monday, but it is still a big number for a side that lost twice in a row in October and is missing three defenders against the only unbeaten English team in the competition. Villa at 8/1 implies about 11%. As opinion, the gap between the table and the price is the story here, and Betfred’s 8/1 on Villa, or 11/2 on the draw, is where we would look for value. The case against is simple: Barcelona at home have been the best attacking side in Spain this season, and they put six past Alaves on Saturday. That is opinion on Tuesday’s prices, not a prediction.
We hold no deal with Ladbrokes, Coral, Unibet, BoyleSports, Bet Victor, Paddy Power or Sky Bet, which is why their prices do not link out.
Elsewhere
Manchester United host Roma at the same time on Tuesday, and Atletico Madrid play Bayern Munich. Wednesday has Manchester City at RB Leipzig, Arsenal at Slavia Prague and Liverpool at Fenerbahce. The Paris Masters is in its second day.
The sportsbook offers for a Champions League night
This game has a catch for anyone backing the favourite. At 1/4, Barcelona fall below the qualifying minimum on all three partner offers, so a bet on the home win does not trigger any of them. The draw and Villa clear all three.
