Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday 13 September, kicking off at 4.30pm UK time on Sky Sports. Three games into the season, City are the only unbeaten team with a perfect record, nine points from nine and a goal difference of plus five. United sit tenth after an opening-day defeat to Hull, a 5-2 win over Ipswich and a share of the points with Everton.
The form line looks lopsided. The head-to-head between these two clubs rarely runs to script.
The case for Manchester City
Enzo Maresca has started with three wins from three and City look like the side everyone else is chasing again. The goal difference tells the story: this is a team scoring freely and conceding little, and a trip to Old Trafford with that platform under them is a different proposition to the nervy City visits of recent seasons.
The concern is the treatment room. Jeremy Doku is still out with the calf injury he picked up in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at Cardiff, and Nico O’Reilly, last season’s PFA Young Player of the Year, is a doubt with a back problem. Losing your first-choice left-sided outlet and a first-team midfielder for a derby at Old Trafford is not nothing, however well the results have gone so far.
The case for Manchester United
United’s results are better than the position suggests. The Hull defeat was the outlier; beating Ipswich 5-2 and then leading Everton twice before conceding a stoppage-time equaliser through Ainsley Maitland-Niles points at a team creating chances rather than one short of confidence. Bruno Fernandes has three goals and an assist already this season, and a fit Fernandes in a derby is the kind of factor that does not show up in a league table.
The injury list works against them, though. Matthijs de Ligt, Carlos Baleba and Tom Heaton are all out, and Marcus Rashford is a doubt after a recent knock. Losing a first-choice centre-back and defensive midfielder against the league’s form team is a significant hole to fill in one afternoon.
The prices
Eleven UK bookmakers are compared above. City are the clear favourites, priced between 21/20 and 11/10 for the away win. United run from just under 2/1 up to 21/10, and the draw sits between 13/5 and 3/1.
Betfred and Sky Bet share the best United price at 21/10, with Betfred also topping the draw market at 3/1. On the away win, William Hill, Betway, Bet Victor, BoyleSports, 888sport, Paddy Power and Sky Bet all go 11/10, the best number on the board for backing City. Virgin Bet are the shortest across the board, pricing City at 21/20 and United at just under 2/1.
Nobody prices this as a coin flip. A form team with a five-goal head start on the season, away from home, at a rival missing two defensive starters, is exactly the kind of match where the market and the table agree.
What looks the smart angle
City at 21/20 is a fair reflection of the gap between these two teams right now, not a value price in either direction. Backing the form and the fitness list over the badge is the rational read, even at Old Trafford.
The draw at 3/1 with Betfred is the number worth a second look. United have already shown this season that they can compete with a strong side for long spells, as they did against Everton before conceding late, and a City side missing Doku’s directness down the left is a fraction more containable than the version that beat Arsenal to nine points from nine. This is opinion and analysis, not a prediction, and a Manchester derby with this much on the line rarely goes as the form guide suggests.
The offers, and where the odds line bites
Three welcome offers sit below this article, and each one’s minimum-odds rule decides what you can use it on here.
Ad: new Betfred customers can bet £10 and get £50 in free bets, split as £30 in sports free bets and £20 in Bet Builder free bets, credited within 24 hours of the qualifying bet settling. The bar is Evens (2.0) or greater, so United at 21/10 and the draw at 3/1 both clear it easily; City’s shortest price of 2.0 sits right on the line, and anything under 2.0 at your book would not trigger it. Debit card deposits only, and the free bets expire 7 days after they land.
Ad: new William Hill customers registering with promo code R30 can bet £10 and get £30 in free bets, paid as 3 x £10 once the qualifying bet settles. Minimum odds are 1/2 (1.5), so every outcome in this derby qualifies, City’s short price included. PayPal, Apple Pay, Skrill, Neteller and Paysafe deposits are excluded, so it needs to be a debit card. Free bets run out 7 days after they land.
Ad: new Virgin Bet members can bet £10 and get £20 in free bets plus 2 x £5 Bet Builder tokens. The 1/2 (1.5) minimum applies here too, so all three outcomes count. The tokens arrive as a pop-up you have to accept within 7 days of qualifying, then use within 7 days of that, and free bet stakes are not returned on any of the three offers here.
If City’s short price is what you fancy, William Hill and Virgin Bet are the two of these three that a bet on the favourite will actually trigger. Betfred’s £50 is the biggest single offer, but it needs a City price of 2.0 or better, or a bet on United or the draw, to count.
Elsewhere this weekend
Saturday carries a full Premier League card: Aston Villa host Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth face Brentford, Chelsea take on Hull City, Crystal Palace play Ipswich Town and Liverpool host Fulham, all at 3pm, with Sunderland v Arsenal following at 8pm. Tottenham host Everton on Saturday too, previewed here, with Spurs yet to score this season and priced close to evens regardless.
If the derby is what gets you opening an account, William Hill’s £30 with code R30 is the offer that any bet in this match, City’s short price included, will trigger, and Betfred’s £50 across sports and Bet Builder free bets is the largest of the three if you are backing United or the draw.
